Frank Morgan I categorize as a character actor due to his ability to play varying roles of importance while not being the star of the film itself. Though he is listed in the credits as a star of The Wizard of Oz he is not a principal actor in many of the scenes.

His importance is that he has the ability to get her home, but in the overall film, he appears in the beginning and end. Morgan has had a great career as a supporting actor but if you were to ask many people who he was they would not know. If you asked them if they remember the actor who played Oz in The Wizard of Oz , they would know who was immediately. His supporting roles which he played a character role would be The Shop around the Corner , and The Three Musketeers From his animated role in The Wizard of Oz , he was able to shed that fantasy persona and play more serious characters when the role demanded it.

Margaret Hamilton I categorize as a wildcard actor as she is able to jump into some very different roles which call for quite a different style of acting and persona. She then becomes the Wicked Witch of the West donning green makeup and changing her voice, demeanor, and acting style to become the witch.

Her performance was so strong as the wicked witch but she went on to play other roles which had no bearing on that role at all. In addition to her role as the witch she went on to play such roles as Mrs. Higley and Jeffrey A. Weinstock Ed. Edited and with a New Preface by Paula Fredriksen.
